Trainee Distribution Technician –  Sean Petig

Trainee Distribution Technician Sean Petig (as pictured), successfully passed his vocational licence category C+E in early February and is now a fully qualified Large Goods Vehicle driver. Sean has progressed within the company to gain his recent qualification as an LGV driver and will follow a structured training plan to work through to gain the necessary experience needed for the role. General haulage is an extremely diverse operation and although Sean’s development training will be candidate lead, it will be business guided helping to promote professionalism through effective driver training awareness and development.

Kevin Brown, Head of Driver Training, Development & Compliance says “The journey to this stage is a fairly intense process with confirmation of knowledge and understanding tested at every turn. Firstly, new drivers have to undergo the stringent medical examination to prove their fitness to drive. Secondly, new drivers must study theoretical based information to gain the knowledge and then pass the LGV theory test which consists of 100 questions to which 85% must be achieved. Thirdly, new drivers must also complete the Hazard Perception test which is computer based and consists of 20 video clips with 22 score-able hazards, which must be identified in the allotted time.”

He added “New Drivers must also pass the module 2 ‘Case Study’ examinations for their Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC) qualification. Once all of that has been successfully completed, the vocational entitlement to drive goods vehicles tests must be trained for and passed, category ‘C’ (rigid) first then category ‘C+E’ (articulated).”

“The last test to be taken is the module 4 ‘show me, tell me’ test where by the driver must be able to provide the examiner with the correct information to a number of questions both verbally and physically to allow the issue of the Driver Qualification card (DCPC).”

This is only the start of Sean’s driving career, well done and good luck from all at Ferguson Transport & Shipping!
